X Pip Spell that does damage per pip till enemy dies

X Pip Spell that does damage per pip till enemy dies and saves remaining pips
Example: If enemy got 200 health left, assume spell does 80 per pip, the spell take only 3 pips and saves remaining 2 pips if player have 5 pips.

There is no guarantee an enemy will be defeated. These X pip spells do extra damage the more pips we have and that extra damage just might be what is needed in order to defeat that enemy. But, the pipper will then have all those extra pips. Why then not just make a spell that does exact-damage of opponent's remaining hp?

Actually, I am confused because I read this as a damage-over-time (dot) spell with how the Op worded it 'till enemy dies'. Can either the Op or Kyle elaborate more on this spell idea please?
