My Wizard Life by Charlotte Drake

I was sitting alone in my secret garden. I smiled to myself. It was a beautiful day. I felt like nothing bad could happen. Then, suddenly the ground beneath me began to quake. I heard an evil, mirthless laugh. I frowned. I had never heard of there being earthquakes around here. Then I saw a man. He laughed that evil, mirthless laugh again. I tried to run back in to my house, but the evil man waved what I guess was a wand, and the ground fell beneath me. Then I was falling in to the darkness and-

Then I woke up. I was REALLY scared.

“It was just a dream,” I told myself.

“There is no such thing as magic.”

“Plus that could never happen.”

After reassuring myself, I went back to sleep. I never remembered the dream in the morning.
“Charlotte, time to get up!”

“But, Mom, it’s a Sunday morning and we don’t have to go anywhere!”

“But, honey, I have to tell you something important.”

I did the loudest, most dramatic groan I could muster before saying “Fine.”

I quickly got dressed and went down the stairs to the kitchen. There was an old guy wearing a robe with stars and a matching hat and matching shoes. He also had a really long white beard and spectacles. He stuck out his hand. He said, “Hello. My name is headmaster Ambrose. I am very pleased to meet you, Charlotte.”

My mom explained why he was here.

“Sweetie, our family is all wizards. I know you don’t believe me, but remember all the times you did things that you thought were weird? And how you always asked me why I didn’t think that it was weird? Because we are wizards.”

“Like when I got really mad at that boy who spied on me yesterday at the park and then I glared at him and he froze and when I went to touch him he felt like ice? And then when I never get cold in the winter or when it’s cold? And those two times when I got really mad at someone and then what I guess was a cyclops came and scared them away and then the cyclops bowed to me,” I asked.

“Yes,” my mom said, smiling.

“And, what school are you headmaster of?” I asked headmaster Ambrose.

“Ah, yes. I am headmaster Ambrose of the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts, and I am proud to say that you have been accepted in to the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts,” headmaster Ambrose said.

Then mom said, “Do you know why you never met your father?”

“No,” I replied.

“Because he is the evil malistaire,” my mom said.

“Oh. That’s bad.”

Headmaster Ambrose gave me a spell book and a wand, and said, “Now, in Wizard City your name is Charlotte Drake.

“So, I’m only changing my last name?” I asked

“Yes,” he said.

Then he said, “And you will live with your uncle Cyrus Drake, who teaches Myth in Ravenwood.”

“Does uncle Cyrus know that I will stay with him?” I asked.

“Yes,” headmaster Ambrose said.

Just then the ground began to quake I heard an evil, mirthless laugh. This is just like my dream! I thought. I suddenly knew what was going to happen next. I was right. We saw the evil man, he waved his wand, and the ground fell beneath me and I screamed. It was completely dark down here. I was still falling. Somewhere above me I heard my mom yell, “Charlotte!”

Then, I heard headmaster Ambrose say, “Malistaire!”

So this was my evil father.

Then Malistaire sneered “Ambrose! I suppose this is your latest student? They will painfully die when they hit the center of the earth!” Malistaire said.

“I can hear you!” I yelled.

Above me I heard Malistaire gasp.

Then Malistaire said, “She sounds just like Sylvia!”

Then headmaster Ambrose said, “That is because she is your daughter.”

I saw Malistaire wave his wand again and I stopped falling. Slowly I began to slowly drift up again. When I was back on land again Malistaire’s eyes filled with tears.

“She looks just like Sylvia, too,” Malistaire said.

And then he grabbed my hand and teleported me and him.
