Never Apologize It's a Sign of Weakness by Nora Skullthorn

“Headmaster Ambrose! Please! This is very important!” I yell, jumping up and down in the crowd of new wizards.

“Nora, wait your turn.” He says, giving me a stern look.

“I’ve been waiting for an hour! Just give me a teleporter to one destination anywhere within the Spiral! Please! That is all I ask.” I say, trying to push my way through the crowd of confused wizards. I put my Sword of Kings on my belt to prevent from hurting anyone.

“Alright, alright! Gamma has the teleporter. Go talk to her.” He says. I can tell the irritation is getting to him. I nod my head to him as a way of thanking him, and then head to where Gamma is. She is perched on her bird stand, studying the floating crystals.

“Gamma!” I say.

“Whoo?” she says. She cocks her head to the side as she gets a better view of me.

“Nora. It’s Nora Skullthorn, level 80 necromancer. Headmaster Ambrose said you would give me the teleporter that would take me anywhere in the spiral.” The words rush out of my mouth.

“I don’t have it.” She says bluntly. I drop my head in disappointment.

“Then where is it?” I ask.

“Erm… Malistaire… He has it.” She says, guilt in her voice.

“What!? How!?” I shout. This is unbelievable.

“Well, it was years and years ago when he was the Death School teacher-“

“I don’t have time for the story Gamma. I have to get it.” I say and run out of the room. I feel bad for cutting her off, but I need that teleporter.

I hop on my bone dragon and push him to go as fast as he can.

“To Malistaire’s lair!” I command.

It isn’t long before we are standing outside the doors into his dungeon. There is no way I’m doing the whole dungeon just to get the teleporter. I go inside the doors and look at the long paths ahead of me. I start running as fast as I can, determined to get to my destination.

By the time I get to the first battle of the dungeon, I’m out of breath. I find a puddle of moderately clean water and scoop it up in my hands and drink it.

“MALISTAIRE!” I scream at the top of my lungs once my breath has returned. I hear nothing except for the snickering from the fire minions.

“I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR ME MALISTAIRE!” I shout again. I know he can. I can feel his eyes watching me. “JUST COME DOWN AND TALK TO ME. THAT IS ALL I ASK.” I shout again. I wait for a moment, hearing no response. Time for plan B. I start screaming at the top of my lungs again. I’m not screaming words, I’m just taking a deep breath and let out loud, long shrieks.

It only takes a few minutes before I hear growling.

“Alright! You have my attention! For goodness sake child your more annoying than these fire minions.” Malistaire’s voice booms as he comes down in a bubble made of powerful magic. I clear my throat, feeling the sting from screaming so much.

“I need the teleporter Gamma gave you years back.” I say.

“What makes you thing I will give it to you?” He says, raising his eyebrows. I close my eyes and take a deep breath.

“I… I will join you. I will become your personal minion.” I say. I keep asking myself if this is worth it. But I know in my heart that it is. He looks at me, studying my gear. Who knows, maybe it will be fun.

“Alright. You have yourself a deal.” He says. He digs in his pocket and then pulls out a metal box with a button on the top. He sticks his hand out and I do the same. I push my hand through the magic bubble surrounding him and my hand starts to tingle and burn. I take hold of the box and then pull my hand out.

“Thank you..” I say, looking into his dark eyes. He gives me a smile. A kind smile. I press the button and whisper my destination.

I appear in a dark cave filled with spider webs.

“Intruder!” yells a woman’s voice.

“Morganthe wait!” I shout before the large spiders appear. I pull my backpack off slowly, and pull out a wrapped box.

“Wha-?” she starts to say.

“Happy Birthday.” I say, and give her a smile. I slowly walk toward her and put the box down at her feet. She looks at me confused, but proceeds to open the box. She pulls out hand stitched doll that looks identical to her. She looks up at me, and smiles. It was so worth this to see her smile.
